Atlanta Trip: Wizard World Comic ConBack in May this year, the Wizard World Comic Convention came into the city of Atlanta and it was a very opportune time for me as I’m in the city for the about ten weeks to visit our client, Elavon.  The Wizard World Comic Con events are held in different cities in the US with the grandest happening in the city of San Diego.   And this time in Atlanta, event was held for three days in the Georgia World Congress Center, just across the Philips Arena and near the CNN Center.

Though I’m not hard fanatic of comic books, I sure did love reading them specially when I was still living in Singapore where I’ve read multiple comic book series from the Singapore libraries.  And among the most famous comic books, I liked reading a lot of Marvel comics specially the X-men series and Spiderman.

So on the second day of the conference, together with my on-site manager and friend, Niko and his wife, Kim, we went on to check out the event.  The ticket costs $40 for access into conference, but to get pictures or autographs with the celebrities in the event has additional costs.

The Bat Mobile

Driving to park our car, we instantly knew that we are coming into the right place.   This as we see nerdy looking people headed to the event plus some of those who dressed up for the occasion into their favorite comic book character.

The main exhibit is located about 2 levels going down into a huge hall which is divided into two separate sections.  The first half they left it empty except for the ticket booths at the far end of the hall.  And the other half is the main hall where everything is happening.

This is my first time to attend this kind of a convention and I was excited on what we can see.  And the first interesting I saw inside was the Bat Mobile, of course made famous by the caped crusader, Batman.  If you wanted to have a photo on the car, they charge you for a fee.  I just thought of taking a photo of it.

The convention basically brought in different shops that sell different comic books from different publishers.  There were also booths that sell posters, super hero costumes, jewelries, pins, action figures, Lego action figures, and anything that is inspired by comic book heroes.

There were also stalls that are dedicated to companies that offer services for providing cosplay artists and make-up artists.  And one the most fascinating there was a booth that has attracted most of the cosplay actors and other visitors in costume.  This booth features a rotating platform and cameras that captures a 3D image of patrons to produce mini action figures of them.

Well aside from the different businesses inside the convention, it also features the opportunity to see, catch a photo and get autographs of some celebrities from Vine and from known TV series that were based from comic books.  And in this convention, the most famous here is Norman Reedus from the hit TV series The Walking Dead.

Robert Knepper of Prison Break

Other celebrities that were there were Robert Knepper from the TV series Prison Break, Milo Ventimiglia who was famous as Peter Petrelli in the TV series Heroes, James Marsters which I remember as Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Kevin Sorbo from Hercules, Sean Patrick Flanery from The Boondock Saints, and Paul Randall Wight, Jr better known as Big Show of WWE.

There were also some young kids who became famous in Vine that young girls have lined up for their autographs, but no one beats the lengthy lines to have that autograph of Norman Reedus where young and adults alike have queued up for him.  And too bad that though the movie Xmen:  Days of Future Past has a booth there, they didn’t have any actors attending.

And well of course, what’s a comic convention without the visitors and artists that dress themselves up as their favorite action hero complete with their spandex suits and their gigantic props.

There we saw zombies, Frankenstein, Princess Leia and Boba Fett from StarWars, and the Ghost King from the Lord of the Rings.

And lastly, once interesting thing that I encountered during this event was that I was unexpectedly interviewed by a reporter from a local FM radio station, Atlanta’s Rock Station, Rock 100.5.
